Extend Your Range of Expression with the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S

Enjoy the flexibility in capturing various perspectives with the first NIKKOR Z S-Line super-telephoto zoom lens

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S, the first super-telephoto zoom lens in the NIKKOR Z S-Line[1] that is the lightest in its class[2] at just 1,355g. Compact and lightweight, the lens provides users with superior dust- and drip-resistance[3] and anti-fouling performance, and delivers outstanding optical performance across its impressive zoom range that is extendable to 800mm with the Z teleconverters.

The NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S features the newly developed Inner Balance Technology, that significantly reduces the shift of the centre of gravity when zooming in and out, reaching a higher level of optical perfection through cutting-edge engineering. The high optical performance and operability of this lens is certain to enable professionals, advanced amateurs, and hobbyists who want to extend their range of expression and dynamically capture distant subjects.

From photographing iconic sporting moments and breath-taking wildlife ones, to shooting the delicate intricacies of flowers and insects, the lens boasts the shortest[2] minimum focus distance in its class at 0.75m at its maximum wide-angle position. Photographers can concentrate on what they do best – to capture compelling perspectives and even the smallest details through a high-powered lens that allows them to get extremely close to subjects, all from a distance.

NIKKOR Z 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6 VR S PRIMARY FEATURES

A SUPER-TELEPHOTO ZOOM LENS FOR SUPER REACH

Capture distant subjects like never before with this super-telephoto zoom lens. The 100mm to 400mm focal length supports a broad shooting range, from exhilarating sports action such as soccer matches and automobile races, to detailed close-ups of flowers and insects. Need to go the distance? Extend the focal distance up to 560mm and 800mm with the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x and Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x respectively and achieve excellent resolution throughout the entire focal range[4].

When paired with the Z 9’s enhanced AF performance, reliably capture photos of a multitude of subjects, even animals and vehicles, such as birds, automobiles, trains, and airplanes that move at high speeds.

UNMATCHED OPTICAL PERFORMANCE

The NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S allows you to get extremely close to the subjects, up to its shortest[2] minimum focus distance of 0.75m in its class, while delivering outstanding resolution from maximum aperture. Capture clear images and videos offering edge-to-edge sharpness with minimal colour bleeding and fringing, thanks to Nikon’s Extra-low Dispersion (ED) and Super ED lens elements. With these in place, users will be able to control lateral chromatic aberration and significantly reduce axial chromatic aberration. In addition, the adoption of Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO Coat effectively minimises ghosting and flaring for clarity and sharpness in every shot, even with a strong light source present.

While telephoto shooting is normally highly susceptible to camera shake, the Vibration Reduction (VR) performance of the lens effectively reduces blur with up to 5.5-stop[5] compensation, allowing users to shoot with confidence, even at slower shutter speeds. When the lens is paired with an in-camera VR, it works in sync with the 5-axis VR of the camera to further compensate for the yaw, pitch, and vertical and horizontal camera shake for a highly effective image stabilisation.

Users can also select VR [SPORT] mode when it comes to capturing or tracking quick and erratic moving subjects, as it enhances the ease of shooting by providing a stable viewfinder image, even during continuous shooting.

DESIGNED FOR SUPERIOR OPERABILITY

Adopting a newly developed mechanism, the Inner Balance Technology helps to maintain the lens balance by reducing the shifting of the centre of gravity of the lens barrel so that users ultimately find it easier to operate. The mechanism prevents the lens from tilting forward when zooming, and lets users shoot while maintaining the angle of the lens – even when mounting their camera and lens setup on a gimbal head.

Whether you are on the move or zooming in and out on a subject, handling the lens is simple as retraction due to its heft is preventable even without a lock mechanism. The lens comes with the smallest[2] zoom ring rotation angle at 80 degrees, allowing for easier handling and switching while shooting. Focusing on getting your shots is now easier as you can customise and assign preferred functions on the L-Fn buttons, and efficiently check essential details without looking at the viewfinder on the lens information panel.

Capture with confidence even under extreme conditions, as the lens is designed for durability with a sealant to keep out dust and water droplets. It also features a newly designed lens hood to effectively minimise ghost and flare by deflecting stray light.

[1] The S-Line is a grade of NIKKOR Z lenses that demonstrate outstanding optical performance, adhering to a high standard of design principles and quality control.

[2] Among full-frame (Nikon FX-format) interchangeable lenses with a minimum focal length range of 100-400 mm and maximum apertures of f/4.5 - f/5.6 for interchangeable-lens digital cameras available as of 28 October, 2021. Statement based on Nikon research.

[3] The lens is not guaranteed to be dust- and drip-resistant in all situations or under all conditions.

[4] AF performance may deteriorate depending on the subject, brightness and focus position regardless of the camera body, causing inaccurate focus, slow focusing speed or flashing of the focus point.

ABOUT THE NIKKOR BRAND

NIKKOR is Nikon's brand of photographic lenses. The NIKKOR name arose from adding "r", a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established, to "Nikko", the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K., the original name used when the company was established. In November 2018, Nikon announced its milestone achievement of 110 million in total production of NIKKOR lenses for Nikon interchangeable lens cameras.

In November 2023, Nikon celebrated its 90th anniversary for NIKKOR, which has grown into an internationally recognised brand that pushes the boundaries of imaging excellence.
