Speed meets accuracy.

When it comes to capturing those game-changing moments, the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S has you covered.  The lens comes with a built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) system that can compensate up to 5.51 stops to effectively reduce camera shake, even at super-telephoto focal distance. Additionally, the bright f/2.8 maximum aperture2 lets you capture clear and sharp images with a natural bokeh.

Designed for movement.

The NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is made to be as light as possible, utilising fluorite lens elements and a robust magnesium alloy structure for the body. Weighing approximately 2,950g, the lens is built to be carried and operated with ease.

"To have a sharper, faster and quieter lens is what all wildlife photographers dream of, and that’s exactly what the new NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S brought. It is razor sharp at f/2.8 and at f/4 with the in-built teleconverter, this lens is optically completely next level.

The real change was the built-in teleconverter. To be able to engage the 1.4x converter instantly and get to 560mm f/4 was game-changing. I could go tight on a subject for a portrait or small bird then see it was about to move and go back to 400mm f/2.8 and catch the action as a bird flew or a wallaby jumped. This lens will genuinely become a wildlife photographer's most sought-after lens. I can’t wait to add it to my kit."

Balanced to perfection.

With the centre of gravity at the tripod collar, the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S provides better weight distribution and stability, which makes handheld shooting an absolute dream.

A lens that reacts with you.

Whether it’s capturing unpredictable wildlife scenes or a sports race, photograph these moments decisively with faster reaction times and greater accuracy. For the first time in any NIKKOR Z lens, the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S has adopted new innovative technology, including a Silky Swift VCM (voice coil motor) as an AF drive motor, along with an optical ABS (absolute) encoder that detects with high precision, enabling you to simultaneously capture fast moving action with unparalleled speed, accuracy, and with quiet operation3.

Dust-and-drip resistance.

The NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S has a magnesium alloy structure with sealing across movable parts on the lens barrel and a rubber gasket around the lens mount for superior dust and drip resistance4. A fluorine-coated front element also repels dust, water and oil which makes it much easier to clean.

Highly customisable.

Enjoy easy-to-access buttons and lens rings, including a customisable control and Fn ring. Return to your favourite focus positions using the memory recall function5.

Stunning image quality.

Delivering the highest performance under any lighting conditions, the revolutionary Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat work together to minimise flares and ghosting effects so you can focus on capturing the sharpest images possible.

Technology

Aspherical Lens

A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimise coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the centre of the lens.

IF Lens

A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Stepping Motor

NIKKOR Z lenses use a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.

Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism

An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting.

ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass

An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.

ARNEO Coat

An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon and used in conjunction with Nano Crystal Coat to further reduce ghost and flare effects caused by incident light entering the lens vertically. This allows for the outstandingly clear capture of images even when a light source is located within the frame.

Fluorine Coat

Photographers need gear that can withstand the elements. Nikon’s fluorine coat effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt, ensuring easy removal even when they adhere to the lens surface. Nikon’s fluorine coat endures a high frequency of lens surface wiping and its anti-reflective effect also contributes to the capture of clear images.

Super ED Glass

Nikon has also developed Super ED glass featuring even lower dispersion properties and extremely high performance in reducing the secondary spectrum, to minimise chromatic aberration even further, as well as other lens aberrations.

Fluorite Lens Element

Fluorite (FL), a lightweight mono-crystal optical material, has excellent optical properties while reducing overall lens weight to improve balance and handling, especially useful in longer focal length lenses.

Vibration Reduction

A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.

Meso Amorphous Coat

Meso Amorphous Coat suppresses ghost and flare caused by incident light from any direction, including those entering the lens diagonally and vertically, to the utmost limit, demonstrating the highest anti-reflection performance in NIKKOR history. With this coating system, amorphous particles are interconnected and overlapped randomly to create a large number of air gaps termed mesopores. The many gaps within the coating form an ultra-fine mesoporous structure, attaining an outstandingly low refractive index. Additionally, a higher-precision base coat is employed to further enhance the anti-refection effect.

Silky Swift VCM

Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (SSVCM) is a new AF drive actuator that combines a voice coil motor (VCM) and a new guide mechanism developed by Nikon. The guide mechanism incorporates guide parts between the lens chamber and where the guide bar touches to minimise gaps to the limit, effectively eliminating vibration within the AF drive. Utilising advantageous features such as this, the superb AF drive system simultaneously delivers higher-speed, higher-accuracy and quieter AF operation, realising unprecedented AF performance. In particular, drive sound is intensively suppressed to a level approaching silence. Even heavy lenses can be controlled precisely at high speed and with minimum noise or vibration. This enables users to reliably capture sharply focused images of decisive moments while also contributing to extremely quiet shooting in both stills and video.

Short-Wavelength Refractive Lens

SR is a high- and specialised-dispersion glass lens that refracts light with wavelengths shorter than that of blue. By controlling short-wavelength light, the lens is able to achieve highly precise chromatic aberration compensation so that the colours in your images are more accurately reproduced. It also allows for more flexible optical designs, which allows for compact, lighter lenses to be designed.

LCD, Video and Photo Gallery images are for illustrative purposes only.

The lens incorporates an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism. The following cameras are compatible with this lens: Z 5, Z 50, Z 7II, Z 7, Z 6II, Z 6, Z 9.
